Travelling to the Isle of Harris

Welcome to Taigh John, your home away from home on the beautiful Isle of Harris. When planning your trip to our self-catering accommodations, keep in mind that there are several routes to choose from. We recommend checking the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry website or the Loganair website for flight options and schedules. Whatever your mode of transportation, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking landscapes and the warm hospitality of the Outer Hebrides.

Via Sea

All ferry routes to and from the Island are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne.

 

There are 3 main routes which will get you to the Isle of Harris.

 

1. Uig Skye - Tarbert Harris (see timetables)

​

This first route is 1hr45mins and will take you into Tarbert, the main village/port of Harris and you will then have to make your way to Taigh John which is just 13 minutes from Tarbert.

​

2. Ullapool, Ross-shire - Stornoway Lewis (see timetables)

​

The second route takes you into the main town of the Islands called Stornoway, Harris is 40miles south from Stornoway and Taigh John is just a further 13 minutes from Tarbert, the main village in Harris.

3. Berneray, North Uist - Leverburgh Harris (see timetables)

​

This ferry will take you into Leverburgh, which is the main village of South Harris and then there is a half hour drive to Taigh John.

 

Please Note: ALL of these routes are extremely busy in the peak season between the months of April and September, it is absolutely to essential to book especially when travelling with a vehicle.

Via Air

Our local airport is based in Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis. It has direct flights to and from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness & Aberdeen.  Flights are operated by Loganair Flights are cheaper when booked in advance and again, also essential to book in the Summer months.

Finding Taigh John

If you enter HS5 3EP into your Sat-Nav and head south-east on the A859 towards A868.

 

If you are travelling from Stornoway on the A859 head south for the Isle of Harris. Then take the Golden Road for approximately 7 minutes to arrive at your destination

 

If travelling from Leverburgh, head north-west on Obbe Rd/A859 towards Ferry Rd. Continue to follow A859 for approx. 35 mins before taking the junction on your right hand side down the Golden Road.
